Phuket : General Information
Located approximately 862 km south of Bangkok, Phuket, the largest island of Thailand, which is often called the Pearl of the Andaman, or the pearl of the south. Its natural resources-rocky peninsula, limestone cliffs, white sandy beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropical forests in the fertile soils contribute to the South, the busiest, most visited and most popular island and province.
Located in the tropical zone off the west coast of southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean, the province covers an area of 543 square kilometers (excluding small islets). It is estimated that Phuket Province covers an area of approximately 590 square kilometers if its 39 other small islands are included. The total length of the islands, from north to south, is estimated at 48.7 kilometers and 21.3 kilometers wide.
Phuket borders on Phang-nga Province to the north. The other 3 sides are surrounded by the Andaman Sea where many of the best dive sites are located. The island is connected to the province of Phang-nga by Sarasin Bridge and Thep Krasattri Bridge.
Stay on the island is easy as there are only two seasons in a year – the rainy season (May-October) and hot season (November to April). The low season in Phuket is between September and October as they are the wettest months. Best time to visit is November to February, when you see blue sky, feel the fresh sea breezes and enjoy the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm beaches. The average temperature varies between 23 C and 33 C.
Phuket’s topology is exceptional, with 70 percent of its surface covered with mountains which stretch from the northern plains to the south and 30 percent are in central and eastern England. The island has no major rivers, except for a total of 9 brooks and streams.
Phuket is divided into 3 administrative counties namely Amphoe Muang, Amphoe Thalang and Amphoe Kathu.
Phuket has much to offer its visitors other than its beaches, natural sand, sky, beach, forest, and world renowned diving sites.
